Year 4 Biological Science - Habitats & Food Chains
Year 4 Biological Science Unit Plan
Students investigate organisms and habitats, then focus on a Queensland grassland to explain the roles and interactions of producers, consumers and decomposers. They construct food chains, use arrows to represent energy transfer, organise population data in a column graph, identify patterns and relationships, and use evidence to predict changes to a mouse population. Students apply their learning to a grassland conservation issue and communicate an evidence-based recommendation to a Local Council audience.
Year 4 Biological Science Teacher Booklet and Journal PowerPoint
Use the Year 4 Biological Science Teacher Booklet to guide each lesson, with curriculum links, learning intentions, explicit teaching, investigations, questioning and student activities provided throughout the unit.
Use the accompanying Journal PowerPoint as a visual aid to model and explain each journal activity before students begin, helping students understand the task, science vocabulary and what they need to record.
Year 4 Biological Science Journal
The Year 4 Biological Science Student Journal guides students through hands-on learning about habitats, organisms, food chains, populations and feeding relationships. Students investigate habitats, construct food chains, graph and analyse data, make evidence-based predictions and explore how changes can affect grassland ecosystems.
Learning builds towards the Grassland Conservation Expo, where students use evidence from across the unit to explain a grassland issue and recommend a solution to the Local Council.
Year 4 Biological Science Posters
Use the Year 4 Biological Science Posters as an ongoing learning wall, reinforcing key concepts including habitats, producers, consumers, decomposers, food chains, energy flow and grassland conservation.
Use the accompanying Poster PowerPoint as a visual aid during lessons to introduce and discuss each concept with the class. Display the relevant visual as learning progresses, while the printed posters remain available for students to refer back to during investigations, journal activities and the Grassland Conservation Expo assessment.
Year 4 Biological Science Resources
Use the Grassland Organism and Food Chain Cards for hands-on sorting and food chain activities. Students can classify local organisms as producers, consumers and decomposers, then arrange the cards into food chains using the arrows to show the direction energy moves.
These cards are ideal for supporting the food chain lessons, allowing students to physically build, discuss and rearrange feeding relationships before recording their understanding in their Student Journal.
